bouncing up and down front end

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee, v8 5.1, milage 142146. The fornt end bounces up and down violently sometime on a rough road. What could cause this?

check the shocks, with the vehicle not moving push down on the front, do one side at a t time and check to see if it continues to bounce, it should not move up and down freely, but should stop within a second or two.
