You sure its not 1192? if rechecking and pops up with this code. Here is a how you replace the PCM and its location in the instructions below. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

those codes are can bus problems like maybe a broken or shorted wire and normally a pro should check those out. it means you have lost communication with the ecm and tcm. pic explains possibilities. Also make sure battery is in good shape including a load test and terminal ends are clean.

Good morning,

The 2005 is not even listed at that site. So the answer is no.

You have a car that is 15 years old and the electronics will wear out over time.

If you need one, get it from the dealer and have someone flash the module with the latest software for you.

Any shop can do this procedure. It does not have to be a dealer.

I attached a site for the module and it lists one from MOPAR.

Recently I left my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo at the airport & upon my return, the truck wouldn't start. Had to get a tow. Once got it to the dealership security key light was on. Was told I needed a new SKIM & new key programmed to be able to 'test' & see if that was the only issue. Tech installed a new SKIM, was not able to program the new key because he said a new PCM was needed. Needless to say, I didn't get the PCM due to the unexpected expense. Spoke with an outside mechanic who said he suspects a ground just shorted out. (He hasn't seen the truck yet.) Was it the probability it just needs a new ground vs a new PCM? Or what else do you think it could be in your opinion?

you really need to see this in order to give an opinion. have the outside mechanic look at it.

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited V8 and I need some advice. I am currently unemployed and really having a time with a local repair shop.

I had some overheating issues back in April and still don't have my car back. They have basically rebuilt the engine from the valves up and everytime they return it to me - fixed - it breaks down again.

The last time it started cutting out and when I stopped it would not restart.

They are saying that it is the ECM and while I have already paid over $3,000 to have the car repaired and 4 times it has already gone back not fixed right, they want an additional $1,000 to fix it.

Obviously I would have not put this much in a car of that age, but I love the car and it is like new condition and has never given me problems before, so I opted to keep it - when I though the repairs would not exceed $2500.

Is it possible this is a separate problem and not the result of somthing they did or did not do? How much should I expect to pay for the ECM and installation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,
Mo

The last time it started cutting out and when I stopped it would not restart.

To catch this do below and go from there-Hold up on the computer it might not be it.

Get a starting fluid/ether/better off gas in a spray bottle and spray into the carb or the throttle body on an EFI. Did it start and die? If not disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, cap and rotor /distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, ECM,Ignitor cam and crank sensors- Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

Can a bad pcm cause the ignition coils and alternator to go bad also. My repair started with replacing the coils, then the alternator and only after the pcm was replaced was the problem of stalling and gauges not working solved.

I can't say it isn't possible. I troubleshoot the wiring circuits on any individual part before replacing anything. Were there any codes?

Did you keep the old parts? You might be able to have the parts tested, I don't have the specs in front of me.

Usually the major parts manufacturers are glad to help with testing specs. ACdelco has helped me several times with part specs on GM vehicles. I don't know about the others, I'd be surprised if they wouldn't help.

My daughter just bought a 2002 grand cherokee.
with 69000 miles.
We checked CARFAX last evening and found that it failed its last emission test.
The vehicle came from New York To Mass.It passed inspections in NY
We called the dealer who said that the vehicle had been sitting awhile and that the computer had shut down and that by driving it that the computer would relearn, and that they would issue us a sticker.
Should we take the vehicle to be tested at another station? And is he telling us the truth?

Thank You

There is a specific drive cycle that can be done to activate and run the monitors. Have the dealer provide you with it to help speed up the process. When the battery goes dead the pcm loses its memory. Whether they are being straight or not, I don't know, but may be.

Last year the engine light cam on and ended up needing a catalytic converter. now a year later the light comes on and the codes are catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1 and 2 respectively. There are 4 O2 sensors. One upstream and one downstream on each leg. Do I need ne w upstreams? Downstreams? New Converter? All?
And why does the system seem to have so many problems, new PCM?

Before replacing anything, I would get a live reading of the O2 sensors. Have them checked to determine if they are working within spec. Make sure the engine is operating at a normal temp too.

The computer display that shows the direction and temperature on my 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee has stopped working. The direction still shows; but everything else shows up as "dashes"; as well as my window controls have stopped working and the dome lights stay on at all times. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Using my own code scanner, I am getting repeated engine light code P0432 which is "Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank2)". This first came on last Fall. I erased code and then it came back this winter and now has continued to return after erasing several times.

My question is what does this mean and what repair options do I have, new ECU?

Thanks
John

It means the 02 sensors are picking up a problem with the emissions from the converter. Usually the converter is either clogging, or the bed has started to break up, You need a new cat!

What does the ECM control on this vehicle other than the engine? About a year ago my remote door locks began partially fuctioning so I took it to my local dealer for service. They told me the "computer" is malfunctioning and it would cost $380 to repair. I declined and have lived with it. Now, the heater works, but the blower motor only sometimes works. Does the ECM control these things? I can't find any thing that references another "computer" onboard.

Ok they be related or not depends. The computer they are refering to is the BCM (body control module) not the ECM. Now the bcm does have control of both items. Now I would like to know about the blower motor. How does it work sometimes. Does it just not work at all sometimes or does it only work on some speeds? Do you have a digital multi meter if needed? Get back to me and we will take it from there.

The blower motor either doesn't work at all or it works at all speeds. I do have access to a DVM.

Ok then this will probably be the BCM as this controls the power to both. I do need to know if this is a Grand Cherokee or not as this does change the wiring and what does what.

The BCM is located on the left side of the dash attached to the junction (fuse) box.
