Question: recently purchased 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 8/31/08 & picked the car up on 9/6/08. I drove the car for 1 week then started hearing a high pitched noise in rear. I brought it to a Jeep dealer and informed that the rear differential was gone and all the bearing needed to be replaced. How common is this problem and is this something that should have been detected prior to purchase. Ever heard of such a thing?

I also just bought a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I did not have this problem; however, I did find out (not from the dealer) that since I was the second owner, I could purchase the extended powertrain warrentee. It cost $150.00 and covers for 7 years or 70,000 miles with a $100.00 deductable. You need to do this within 30 days of purchase and must be the second owner. This may or may not cover your issue, but it may be worth investigation.
