How simple some things can be, if you only look closely. Thanks, it works fine now.

How high is it, and how long has it been this way? Have you tried replacing the oil sending unit?

Oil sending unit is a common cause for this type of problem. It is located near the oil filter.

Let me know if it fixes the problem.

1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 5.2 liter, 108,000 miles. The oil pressure is fluctuating on the high end of range, between 35 psi and 60 psi. I am seeing evidence of leaks (oil filter, pan gasket and both valve cover gaskets). Is all of this related? What repairs do I need to make?

Get an oil pressure test done. If it was too high it would buldge the oil filter. But in the mean time how dirty is the oil?

The gauge is working OK. I checked it with an external hand held meter. The oil filter is not bulging. The car gets an oil change about every 5 months or 5000 miles (whichever comes first, usually 5 months; don't do much driving here in Kainaliu, Hawaii. Which is part of the problem. There a very few reliable mechanics in this neck of the woods).

1990 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0, Auto, 201,000 miles. Just changed the oil like I normally do using Mobil 10-40 with a quart of Lucas oil stabilizer. Been using this oil and additative for a while now since my rear main seal was leaking; now it is not. I started up the engine after the oil change, and my pressure at idle was around 40 (normal would be between 25 and 30), and when I went for a test drive, the pressure went up to 60 during normal operating speeds (normal is around 40). Even more strange is when I went up a hill, the oil pressure shot up to 80, and I eased off the gas and it came back down. Tried the hill several times with similar results. I dont know if I should try changing the oil again without Lucas, since Lucas has worked just fine for me for a long time. Thanks for your help!

The only way to find out is remove the oil pressure sending unit, install a mechanical oil pressure gauge and read off-If its normal at idle and at 2000rpm's there's no problem-try replacing the OSU and check its connections.

Is the engine knocking or making some weird noises from the lower end of the engine when you accelerate/decelerate if not-check the oil pump pressure relief valve and for sludge.

The engine is running like a top. Before I get in to pulling the pan to check the pump, I think I'm going to try running a can of motor-flush through it, then drain and refil with regular 10-40 oil with no additives. If it is still acting up, I'll take it to the shop. Thanks for your help
