How do I check lifters?

I've been experiencing a 'ticking'noise and it finally came to a head the other day. The noise doesn't go away with speed or time, but does increase as the gas pedal is pushed.

I've pulled the valve cover, ignition coil and the spark plugs (based on Haynes), but i don't know what symptoms to look for. I am going to check the clearance, but the manual isn't as detailed as I'd like for it to be on this topic.

If this doesn't sound like the lifters, what should I check instead?

If you have the valve cover off, are any of the rocker arms loose when the valve is closed?

Look up the specs in the manual and check them. Usually if you can hear them, they are loose enough to feel. Also, you did have good oil pressure, correct?

I've been using the correct amount of oil and have tried Sea Foam and another oil detergent, but I haven't checked the pressure other than using the dashboard. The gauge on the dash reads slightly above the halfway point. I'll check the specs tonight or tomorrow night and reply back to you.

Thanks for helping.

I'm glad to help. Let me know what you find. Also, when you check them, make sure the cam isn't starting to open them or you'll never get a correct setting.
