2002 Jeep Cherokee check gauge light

My check gauge light came on today & I noticed the temp gauge in the red. I turned off the car for about 20 minutes. When I restarted it, it was running VERY rough & when I tried to accelerate it wouldn't. There was nothing leaking under the car - any ideas what it could be? Thanks

If it still has coolant, you may have to do a compression test to see if you blew a head gasket.
