2001 Jeep Cherokee Temp Gage

The temp gauge in my Jeep is not work, it just stays at 0. If the temp sensor was not working would it trigger an engine light?

The reason I ask is because I am wondering where I should begin looking for the issue.

you probably have a faulty temperature gauge or sending unit. start with the easy one first and go from there.
