2001 Jeep Cherokee leaking gas tank

I would suggest if you can get a helper to hold the tank with you


step by step

Fuel tank may be drained by lowering fuel tank or if fuel pump is operating, by pumping fuel from fuel tank using a scan tool

Release fuel pressure from fuel system, if not previously done.
Disconnect negative battery cable.
Raise and support vehicle.
Remove fuel tank skid plate (if equipped).
Remove 4 fuel hose shield mounting bolts and remove fuel hose shield.
Disconnect filler and vent hoses from upper filler neck.
Remove tailpipe heat shield.
Support fuel tank with hydraulic jack.
Disconnect fuel supply line from fuel supply tube near front of fuel tank.
Disconnect EVAP canister vent line near front of fuel tank.
Disconnect fuel pump module electrical connector. Remove 2 fuel tank strap retaining nuts.
Position fuel tank straps away from fuel tank.

CAUTION:To prevent fuel loss through hoses, keep left side of fuel tank higher than right side.
DO NOT allow hose openings to drop lower than top of fuel tank.

If fuel tank was not previously drained, ensure fuel tank cap is installed to prevent spilling of any fuel. Slightly lower right side of fuel tank while feeding both fuel hoses through access hole in body.
Lower fuel tank from vehicle.

thank you for the reply.... in more detail... previously the fuel pump was replaced... Recently the engine light went on and the code referenced loose cap along with a number of other possible problems. I replaced the cap since the old one seemed to "click" with minimal torque... I mention the replacement of the fuel pump because most likely the tank is not leaking (its never been off road) do you think it may be the earlier repair or something else?

I was going to ask if the tank was down before ,for a fuel pump replacement most common to find that the seal on the pump leaking
