2001 Jeep Cherokee How to reset the check engine light

The check engine light came on after about 20 miles into a trip on cruise control. All instrument guages read normal. No visual signs of a problem, although going downhill the cruise went off 3 times in about a 5 mile stretch. I could resume the cruise and it came back on at that point.
any information you can give me on reseting the engine light will be appreciated. Thank you. Dale.

Need a scanner to reset go to Auto Zone have codes read post and will be able to help find problem.
