The check engine light comes on intemittantly. we have had it serviced by a dealer several times with no results. They have replaced the gas cap, replaced a leaky fitting on the fuel tank, and replaced a section of a line between the fuel tank and engine. this all after having pressurized the fuel tank with smoke. After each repair the check engine light is off for a few days and then comes back on. The car is used for around town driving only and not every day. It sits in the driveway rather than a gargage, year around since new.

Ok if you would call around to your local parts stores and see if one does a free scan. If so get it scanned and get the codes and then have them clear the codes. Get back to me with what codes have been found.

On my way home this evening I had to accelerate hard to get out of the way of a fast moving car coming from behind. The revs went high , but just for a couple of seconds and the check engine light came on and stayed on.I'm taking it for service in the morning. It seems to be running fine but I'm still worried, I just bought it a month ago. Thank you.

Lately I have had the smell of raw gas when I start my Jeep and now the check engine light is on. The smell goes away shortly after the vehicle is started. I have checked the gas cap to make sure it is seated properly. Can you give a few ideas of what may be causing this?

Hi:
To start, check the fuel tank and fuel lines under the vehicle to look for leaks or evidence of leaks. If there are none, do the same under the hood. Look for leaks near the injectors, fuel rail, fuel line. If every thing looks good, I want you to take the vehicle to a nationally recognized auto parts store like Advance or Auto Zone. Usually at no charge, they will scan the computer for trouble codes. By doing this, we will know if a sensor is causing the problem and which one it is.

Let me know what you find.

Joe

Also, regardless if you find a leak or not, have the computer scanned and reset.

Autozone says it's a large vacuum leak. Most likely a faulty gas cap. So that is where I will start. Thanks for the info. I will reply back if thats not it..

Hi,

Okay, they found a EVAP fault code. The gas cap is the easiest thing to try first. If the light comes on again, go to the EVAP canister and check for cracks, broken vacuum hoses, or disconnect vac hoses. If there is no luck there, check for vacuum leaks on the engine itself. If that fails, you may have a defective vent / purge solenoid.

We will cross that road when we reach it. I hope the gas cap fixes it.

Let me know if you have any other questions or need help.

Joe

Make sure the gas cap is properly tightened light continues scan the computer to see what code it is?

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

My guess is probably within the evaporation control system after the filled-up. Like a bad gas cap.

My dealer is unable to fix the problem on a permanent basis. The check engine light will come on, the engine sputters around 80km with a distinct power loss and knock. At the same time, the cruise control also goes out. If left in this state, the engine will also stutter and knock with the power loss at 100km and the power loss will continue to worsen.

First thing you need is the fualt code, do this.
With the ignition switch in the OFF position, depress the TRIP and RESET buttons.
While holding the TRIP and RESET button turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Continue to hold the TRIP and RESET buttons until the word CODE appears in the odometer windows (about five seconds ) then release the buttons. If a problem exists, the system will display Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's). If no problem exists, the code 999 (End Test) will momentarily appear. Post all codes displayed.

Hi, I only have a trip/reset button. I pressed and held it as advised - the instrument cluster went through a check showing all the lights at various times and the guages all going trough a number of positions. The odometer showed all 1's through all 9's, then showed the trip setting. Pretty neat. The word Codes never showed up and at the end of the dash test, the engine check light came on again.
I read a number of stuttering, power loss problems for Jeeps and it seems the fuel pump may be the problem.
Any thoughts? Thanks.

2001 Jeep Cherokee mileage: 92,000. My check engine light comes on and the trouble codes say its problem #25 - idle air control sensor circuit. The dealer and auto parts stores say there is no idle air control on my vehicle. Then what is trouble code 25? In addition, in the morning when it is cold I can start it fine but it will not stay running unless I hold down the accelerator. It acts like an old car, but once it is warmed up its okay. Please help, thank you.

The symptoms you describe are classic idle air control motor failure. As far as we know, your car should be equipped with an idle air control motor.

I bought my Jeep at 56,000 miles and within 3 weeks of purchase the engine light came on, stayed on for 1 week and then turned off. It continued this "on for a while, off for a while cycle" for several months. I diagnosed the error codes as O2 sensor issues, and have replaced both sensors. I have also changed all the plugs, and cables. The engine light is now on all the time. I can reset the light, it stays off for a day or two, and then comes on again. Any suggestions?

3 weeks go the "check engine light" on my Jeep went on. The retrieved code was P0303 - cylinder 3 misfire detected. The spark plugs and ignition coil assembly were replaced. Yesterday after I came out of the grocery store I started the car and stepped on the gas, when I put the car in drive, the car started forward then I felt a slow down in power and had to apply more pressure to the gas pedal. The "check engine light" immediately went on. When my mechanic checked the code he said it did not make any sense as the system read that the problem occurred while the car was turned off???? Because the code made no sense, he said it would be difficult if not expensive to try to detect the problem. He said he would reset/turn off the light and that I should bring it in the next time this happens. Obviously something is wrong because I felt it and I am now concerned about driving the car. I asked him to recheck the work they did 3 weeks ago. Any other suggestions.

Hi there,

I would do the same, do a re set and clear any codes, if the check light comes on then get a scan, there may be a problem with in the ECU, these can be tested by a specialist repairer, do the re set first and see how you go.

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee sport. The battery gauge swings from low to mid and my 'check gauge' light periodically comes on, then goes off. I don't know if it's related but my autostart won't keep the engine running: once it successfully starts, it shuts off, then starts again. Can't be awesome for the starter....

Have the computer scanned for code/s-you have a problem within the engine management system that caused the CEL to turn on-This is your starting point of diagnosis, finding out what's going on.

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 137,000 miles 4.0 liter enging.

The check engine came on and the engine started to idle rough (as if there was a constant miss fire). As I accelerated it was jumpy and rough and the check enging light started to flash. As I got to speed and stayed at a constant speed it smoothed out but when I accelerated it started again.

Could this be a wiring harness problem since it has never been replaced or could it be something else.

After Thanksgiving dinner, started driving home. Halfway home, car sarted to shake terribly. Since I was only a mile from home, I slowed down and drove home. There was smoke coming from the rear center of the car, probably from the rear axle. What's up?

Hi -

Yesterday on my way home from work, my "check gague" ligth came on & then my temperature gague suddenly went all the way to hot. I drove it home 25 miles. As I was almost home, the light went off and the temperature went to normal. This morning, on my way into work it suddenly went to hot again. Half-way to work, the gague went back to normal reading.

I checked the coolant & the reservoir was completely empty. The mechanic checked for leaks & could not find one. He is giving the car a flush and new cooant put in. The check engine light did come on after I got to my office and recranked it to take it around the corner to the mechanic.

My question for now is: What kind of damage, if any would the engine have endured from me driving it that way for 50 or so miles? I have put close to $4,000 into repairs in the past year. I need to decide whether or not I need to start looking for a new vehicle.

Thanks!

The coolant had to go somewhere if no leaks then internal leak into the cumbustion chamber by headgasket failure. Have the shop pressure test system to help find leak tell them to pull spark plugs to check for coolant entering engine. This should answer your question about possible damage.
