My 4wd seems to work both in low and high range but I never get an indicator light on the dash. Does this indicate a mechanical problem or just a burned out bulb?

Chances are it is just a bulb. However, on the transfer case is a vacuum actuated switch that sends power to the light when the 4wd is engaged.
