The steel rod from the fire wall down to the front end
has a small amount of play in it. I noticed it when I turned the wheel to park I would hear a clunk. How big a job is this to fix and is the car safe.

PS: I do keep the car (Grand Cherokee) well maintained.

If you're referring to the four bars that run from the firewall to the axle, there should be no play in the rubber bushings. That will cause clunking and a change in alignment when braking which will result in a brake pull.

If the shaft you're referring to rotates with the steering wheel, it is a two-piece collapsible steering shaft. It is somewhat common for them to become loose resulting in a clicking that you can feel in the steering wheel. The shaft must be replaced to stop the clicking. The new shaft will have a lot of looseness between the two sections until it is extended into the installed position.
