2000 Jeep Cherokee idle problems

The vehicle idle is erratic and I have to sometimes tap the pedal to get it to idle down. This morning when I first started driving it wouldn't idle at all but when i kicked into neutral i could keep it running by pressing on the pedal. By the time i got it to work it was idling fine again.

THere are several things that can cause this type of problem. Has the check engine light come on?
