I have a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 4wd with 120k. When you take off from a cold start the trans hangs up in 2nd grear for about 5-10 seconds and then it will eventually shift into 3rd. After the first take off and after it goes through all the gears it will shift normal from 1rst to 4th with no issues. Also if you let the truck warm up in the morning for atleast 5 minutes it will shift perfectly normal as well. So it seams that this problem is only when the truck is cold after it warms up its fine. The fluid in the trans. was red and did not smell. the filter looked old and the plastic case was brittle. I changed the filter and put new fluid in it. The same problem still exixts. Any thoughts?

Have you checked the TPS to see if it was reading properly? How is the throttle cable is it streched? How is the shifter cable? Get back to me and we will go from there.

Hi,
I took your advise and read how to check the TPS. The voltages were not inline. I went ahead and got a new one and put it on. Actually two problems were solved with changing that. The trans is now shifting great and it had a slight breaking up at 4k rpm. Both problems are now non existent. Before I found this site I called a trans shop and he told me 2200 to rebuild it. What a Joke. I cant thank you enough for your help. I will definately turn to this site for future problems I need help with. Thanks Again!! John

That is so good to hear. I am glad that it fixed your problems and for a lot less then the 2200 trans rebuild. See a lot of shops forget to keep it simple and start there first. The TPS reads the throttle possition and this info is also used to dictate when and how the trans should shift. Again Thanks so much for your support and have a great day.
