Engine Performance problem
1999 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 168 K miles

My Jeep Grand Cherokee has never has any major problems. It has only been 2,000 miles since I last had my oil changed. For the last week, my oil pressure gauge has been reading normal when I am pressing the gas, but the pressure goes down to zero when I am idling & the "check gauges" light comes on. Yesterday, the oil pressure stayed at zero when I was pressing the gas & the "check gauges" light stayed on constantly. My boyfriend thinks it's the oil pump that needs to be replaced. Could it possibly be anything other than the oil pump?

When the gauge says 0 PSI, do you hear any ticking or knocking from the engine? If not, chances are the oil sending unit is bad. It is what sends the signal to the oil pressure gauge. If it is making engine noises as I described, you will need to remove the oil pan to access and check the pump. Chances are it's the sending unit.

Let me know what you find.

Joe,

You were right. It was the sending unit. Thanks so much for your help!
