Engine Cooling problem
1998 Jeep Cherokee 6 cyl Four Wheel Drive Automatic 156k miles

the engine gets hot when idling, but only when the air-conditioner is on. Another problem i'm having now is that the check engine light came on and my car started shifting rough. I checked the fluid but it was full.

Are the cooling fan's coming on or do you have a clutch fan? Also, take the vehicle to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan the computer for codes. THey will do it for free, then you'll know what kicked the light on.
