I was told that I need to rent a special tool to replace my CKP sensor by the parts store, but there is no mention of needing this tool in my Haynes repair manual. Do I really need something other than the standard faire in my tool box?

nothing that I am aware of..just remove a few parts (air duct, etc..) to access the CKP then disconnect and remove it.
