I have had a slight leak which was apparently antifreeze. In a big blast of steam shootinf out from under the hood, apparently all the fluids are gone.

No hoses appear to be leaking so the general thought is that we need a new radiator. Is that something a shade tree mechanic could tackle for his financially strapped and currently unemployed mother? Is it ok to buy a used radiator if one can be found?

Yes you could do this it isn't very hard. I would find a good price on a new one I don't recomend used radiators as you don't really know what you are getting. It could be plugged or who know's what.
