1996 Jeep Cherokee Engine Size unknown Four Wheel Drive Automatic 108000 miles

My mileage went from 21 mpg to 10 mpg. I was told by 2 backyard mechanics that it was my o2 sensor. Could this be?

Very possible, any check engine light?

Fuel miliage loss can be from various sources. Is the tail pipe show black on the inside (rich condition).

The o2 sensors can be checked by a competent garage as they will monitor the wave pattern of the sensor to determine thier strength.
