1996 Jeep Cherokee Electrical - Acceleration Jerky

Thought this was a transmission problem but the mechanic checked thorougly and said trans fine. He thinks it's an engine related electrical problem. He said jeep is shutting off and on, which is why I feel the "jerks" on acceleration. I also feel the jeep is not shifting into gear. I'm ready to take to electrical shop but would like to give electricians some help to decrease the "search time" for the problem. Already changed fuel filter, spark plugs & wires, speed sensor.

have the powertrain control module checked it may need software update
