Hi I have a 91 jeep cherokee with high mileage. Yesterday it started making this rattling, scratchy noise around the serpentine belt but even after lifting the hood and looking directly at the belt I cant tell if thats the source. What do you think?

Chances are the waterpump is making noise. Check the weep hole to make sure there are no leaks. Also, remove the serp belt and spin the pulleys to see if there is any resistance or noise. Also, start the engine to see f the noise is gone with the belt off.

NOTE: Do not run the engine for longer than 10 seconds with the belt off. It will over heat and could cause more damage.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
