When I turn the key on the jeep there is a grinding noise

If you mean. When the key is in the STARTING positionit grinds. If you mean ON position disreguard my answer below.

You may either need a new starter (preferred fix)

Or your flywheel teeth have a undesired problem

I am betting on the starter.
