1998 Jaguar XK8 shifter

1998 Jaguar XK8 V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

when I put the shifter into P it makes a beeping sound and won't go completely into P , have to play around with it, put it into N to be able to start it .and try again back into P until it stops beeping.
Any answers?

have the vehilce plugged into a diagnostic computer to check for fault codes stored
