Removal
Disconnect battery and drain cooling system. Remove air filters and remove right-hand intake manifold, if either head is to be removed. Remove left-hand intake manifold, only if left cylinder head is to be removed. Remove right-hand camshaft cover, if either head is to be removed. Remove left-hand camshaft cover, only if left-hand cylinder head is to be removed.
NOTE:Align camshaft using timing gauge on cylinder head being removed. If both heads are to be removed, align right-hand camshaft.
Remove battery, only if it is next to cylinder head being removed. Remove rubber grommet from front of timing cover. Insert blade of screwdriver (JD 42-2) through timing cover hole and release timing chain tensioner. Rotate crankshaft until valve timing gauge (C 3993) can be inserted in slot in camshaft front flange.

Using tensioner retractor tool (JD 44), fully retract timing chain tensioner. Remove special tools, as soon as the locking catch engages on step. Disconnect camshaft sprocket from camshaft and install sprocket retaining tool (JD 40).
Remove self-tapping screws securing starter solenoid heat shield from right cylinder head. Remove set screws securing heat shield to exhaust manifold. Remove nuts securing exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold. Remove bolts securing exhaust pipe to exhaust tube and allow exhaust pipe to rest on front suspension crossmember.
Remove camshaft oil feed banjo bolts. Remove A/C compressor. Remove hardware securing cylinder heads to timing cover. Remove cable clips from studs. Loosen cylinder head nuts, working from center of head outward. Remove cylinder heads and place on wooden blocks to prevent damaging valves. Discard old gaskets.
