1999 Jaguar XJ8 loss of power

after steady high speed (80 mph) cruising if you decelerate on the overrun the engine appears to cut out i.e. no power if you attempt to accelerate. You then have to put the car in neutral as it decelerates and start the car normally. it always starts instantly and you just re0select drive and continue. it is most strange. What the hell is causing it?
