1998 Jaguar XJ8 TRansmission slips

My Jaguar just got a new engine installed. It wruns great until last night. when I parked it something lreaked onto the engine and smoked up-it didn't smell like oil. Now the car shift very slowly into first, stays in first or shifts very oddly. I hope it just fluid. Could my wish be true?
