Noises problem

Before I get to the question, I will like to give a brief description fo what happned before the noise started in the engine.
The overflow hose leaked and although I kept adding water the engine ran hot while driving and cut off. I started it again to fully get in the drive way, and then allowed it to sit overnight. After filling up with water the following morning it started without any difficulty but had this loud knock coming from the engine. Before this, the car ran perfectly. HELP!
