Automatic transmission noises

1997 Jaguar XJ6, mileage: 84,000, Automatic Transmission. My car makes a clunking sound every morning, right after it moves around 1 - 2 yards. Then, during the day, If the car is stopped less than an hour, there are no noises, but if I do not drive it for more than 5 hours, then the noise is there again. What should I do? If I need to replace the transmission, can somebody give me a fair estimate? Many thanks.

Well it dosent sound to me that you need a new transmission. However if you have a sport option button I would be more leaning towards looking at that, they are an on going problem and can cause noise like yours. Good luck :D
