are there any secrets to replacing the fuel pump? Any assorted common electrical issues....like screwed up relays, hidden fuses or fusable links?

There is a fuel pump relay which you can jumper to test the fuel pump. Other than that you have to pull the fuel tank and change the pump. Are you sure the pump is bad, it could be several other things.
