My Jag is being screwy in the back end. All blinkers and lights in the front of the car are working perfect and the light in the back window always works but I am having an issue in the tail/brake/blinker assemblies in the back.

Nothing is working all at the same time, sometimes the blinkers blink and sometimes they dont. Sometimes the brake lights work and sometimes they dont. Sometimes the tailights work and again sometimes they dont.

I have cleaned up the grounds and replaced all the bulbs but I cant figure it out. The assemblies are all clean and there is no moisture getting in there so I am just really confused. Any ideas?

Hi there,

this will be a earth problem, i would go back and check all the earths and also check the voltage at the loom plugs, also check for corrosion at loom plugs and tight fit as well.

I will look into that. I tinkered with it some more last night and determined that when I tap the relay mounted into the side of the trunk that it starts working so I am beginning to think it is the relay.

As far as corrosion, I cant find any on anything. Everything back there is really clean...

It was the relays. They are these interesting boxes in the trunk attached to the sidewalls behind the carpet. It turns out the 88, 89 and 90 Jags have faulty relays but they fixed the problem in 1991. I was able to find some used relays for $150 a piece from a 91 XJ6 and now everything is working perfect!
