2005 Jaguar X-Type Black exhaust smoke and stuttering

2005 Jaguar X-Type 4 cyl Manual 41000 miles

Exaust emits heavy black smoke on heavy throttle pressure and engine intermittently stutters with loss of power usually travelling above 45mph and at low efort. Can you advise the cause?

have the vehicle plugged into a diagnostic computer to check for fault codes ... replace air filter .. check/clean or replace the MAF sensor
