2003 Jaguar X-Type 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

Jaguar x type, Diesel which is misfiring and occasionally pushing out black smoke with engine management light not turning on to show fault . Would be grateful if you have any Ideas what is wrong?

start by adding a good fuel addative to the tank to clean out the fuel system
