1996 Jaguar Vanden Plas Will not go into drive from park

My fathers 1996 Jaguar Vanden Plas will not come out of park. He said it started about 3 months ago and if he fidgeted with it (his words) he could get it to go. He has since passed away and my fidgeting doesnt seem to to work. Any ideas?

Check and test the brake switch if okay -have the shift interlock control system checked out-
