2000 Jaguar S-Type shifter

Common problem. May be the J-gate (shifter) or the shift cable. If it hard to shift through the modes then most likely the cable. These model years also have an inherent transmission issue where it's hard to get out of park on an incline. You'll have to disconnect the shift linkage from the j-gate then try it to see if it moves hard.
