what kind of diagnostic reader do I need to read the codes on a Jaguar??

It depends on what year your Jaguar is. If it is OBD-II than most OBD-II Scan tools(newer) will get you any codes that are stored. I used a generic Matco to get codes off of a 2002 XJ-8 the other day.
