1997 Other Jaguar Models idling too fast and sometimes doesn

i have a 97 xj executive 3.2 sometimes it wont start, if i pour a small drop of petrol down the air intake plastic pipe it starts no problem but idles around 1500 revs i have changed the temperature sensorthat tells the ecu, but still no difference any help much appreciated

start by checking fuel pressure
