my isuzu trooper backfired when i tried to pull out onto the highway. when it backfired the car shut off and it will turn over but wont run. we got it to run for about 30 seconds then it cut off again it has quit backfiring when we try to crank it but when it did backfire smut came out of the muffler.

A lean or rich mixture could cause backfiring-try checking the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel pump//fuel filter.
