The truly best thing to do is to take it to have it inspected by a local mechanic. It may cost a little extra for you but not nearly is what it may cost if you purchase a junker unknowingly.

If you do want to check things over yourself, just remember your 5 senses! Do you smell anything unusual before, during or after driving the vehicle? (burning smells, fuel smells etc..) . Do you hear anything unusual ? (i.e. metal on metal scraping, clunking etc..) . Do you feel any vibrations while driving? Do you see anything unusual such as smoke from the exhaust, wet spots on or near the engine compartment or inside vehicle? And always , look around the entire vehicle. Visually inspect the motor compartment, underneath the vehicle, the trunk and inside cab. Of coure there is nothing to taste though..so i guess just 4 senses are needed here!
