The truly best thing to do is to take it to have it inspected by a local mechanic. It may cost a little extra for you but not nearly is what it may cost if you purchase a junker unknowingly.
If you do want to check things over yourself, just remember your 5 senses! Do you smell anything unusual before, during or after driving the vehicle? (Burning smells, fuel smells etc.). Do you hear anything unusual? (I.E. Metal on metal scraping, clunking etc.). Do you feel any vibrations while driving? Do you see anything unusual such as smoke from the exhaust, wet spots on or near the engine compartment or inside vehicle? And always, look around the entire vehicle. Visually inspect the motor compartment, underneath the vehicle, the trunk and inside cab. Of coure there is nothing to taste though. So I guess just 4 senses are needed here!
