alternator replacement instructions please?

I have a charging problem that has stumped most of the mechanics I've talked to. It began with a bad alternator, replaced. Then no problem till long trips (3-4hrs) at night with lights drawing more current, battery went dead several times in same scenario. During these times the alternator would seem to overheat and quit charging till cooled.

Hello,

It sounds like you might have too much load going through your alternator. Does your vehicle have any additional consumers like more powerful driving lights or perhaps a sound system installed? It could be that the alternators rated output is not high enough to cope with the additional load created by these additional consumers. This would cause the alternator to overheat . Using a digital volt meter you can test the alternator yourself
