When I turn the key all I hear is a clicking noise?

1998 Isuzu Rodeo Automatic 100000 miles

i've been having problems starting my isuzu rodeo. When I turn the key all I hear is a clicking noise. One guy told me that its my starter and that I should hit it w/ a hammer but not too hard. Lol. Someone else told me that its my battery.
