Gentlemen; I have a '95 Rodeo that has me stumped. I've pulled the thermostat. The radiator has been flushed and flows freely. It doesn't really get hot at idle, but overheats quickly during/after quick excelerations. There's no mix between coolant, oil or exhaust (as far as I can tell). I filled the system and disconnected the upper radiator hose. There's little to no water moving at idle but it does surge some coolant when the engine is rev-ed. Shouldn't it be moving more coolant at idle? Is it possible for the pump blades to be worn away? I've never had a pump fail before without leaking.

One way to test for a bad water pump is to squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine is hot and idling. Careful, because the hose will be HOT! If you do not feel much coolant circulating through the hose when you rev the engine, the pump may be bad. The other cause might be a bad thermostat that is not opening properly (remove and inspect the thermostat), or a clogged radiator.
