auto locking hubs not fully engaging. missing shims on front left axle hub clutch assembly. how necessary are they ?

Hi
Shims are important if measured distance between snap ring and drive hub is more than .004 in(.10mm) then shims needed. Have you checked for wear in drive clutch?
