Auto locking hubs not fully engaging. Missing shims on front left axle hub clutch assembly. How necessary are they?

Hi
Shims are important if measured distance between snap ring and drive hub is more than.004 in(.10mm) then shims needed. Have you checked for wear in drive clutch?
