1996 Isuzu Hombre timing chain

I have 1996 isuzu hombre, 2.2 - 4cyl. Timing chain broke. I have gotten to timing chain. I am going to replace gears and chain. I am replacing tensioner because it broke also. I cannot get a straight answer on next question- When I put crank and cam gear on, can I just line up the marks on the gears with the tensioner like one repair manual says. One person said I had to pull #1 plug and turn crank until it was at top of cylinder. The rest of manuals just say to turn crank and cam gears until both marks on gears line up with appropriate marks on tensioners. Any help would be appreciated. i have never done this. Thanks
