Engine replacement instructions please?

You must start by disconnecting the battery and draining the coolant. Here are the instructions in the diagrams below to help you get the job done. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

The 3.2 should be the same from 1997-2004. To make it easier and because you know that yours runs good except for the rod knock, I would swap over any parts that even look suspect on the yard engine. Also look it over for any issues like, broken parts, cracks, broken bolts and such. As it is your vehicle I would probably wash it off really good and replace things like valve cover gaskets, oil pan gaskets, check over anything that can leak and change it while it is out. Timing belt, rear main seal, oil pump. You will not have better access than with the engine out.

You could drop new rod and main bearings in it if you wished. Even pull the heads and do a valve job and clean out anything inside it. All depends on how involved you wanted to get.

Obviously the same size engine. That would be the 2.2 liter. That year was also available with a 3.2 liter V-6. You just have to be sure to have all the proper smog control components for you year. Some states have other regulations and requirements, but typically, legally, you can use any of the engines that were available for your model in the year it was produced.

Depends on what engine is going back in it.
A long block doesnt have any sheet metal (oil pan-valve covers-etc) so it takes longer - 18.7 hours of labor plus.3 for power steering adn.4 for A/C

A complete engine (salvage yard) is alreay put together for the most part so you dont have to swap everything over- 10.2 hours plus the same.3 and.4 for P/S and A/C

Well anything is possible. But this would be a pretty expensive and time consuming project.
You are going to run into many many problems.

So in answer to your questions yes it can be modified just depends on if you want to spend hundreds maybe thousands doing it.

ENGINE REMOVAL

Preparation:

Disconnect battery ground cable.
Remove engine hood: In order to return the hood to the original position exactly, make alignment on the hood and hinges before removal.
Drain radiator coolant.
Accelerator cable: Disconnect from throttle valve and common chamber.
Ventilation hose
Air hose
Air cleaner assembly
Canister vacuum hose
Vacuum booster hose
Engine harness connectors
Disconnect three connectors on canister side.
Battery ground cables
Disconnect two black and white connector clips from the power steering pump bracket.
Ground cables
Disconnect two terminals connected to the battery support and the front right frame.
Bonding cable connector
Disconnect connector on the left side dash panel.
Bonding cable terminal
Disconnect terminal on the back of left bank.
Starter harness connector
Disconnect from starter.
Radiator
Disconnect upper and lower hoses from the engine.
Disconnect coolant reserve tank hose from radiator.
Disconnect ATF hose from the pipe. (A/T)
Remove radiator lower hose clip from the hose bracket.
Remove radiator lower fan shroud.
Remove radiator.
Power steering pump drive belt
Power steering pump
Remove two bolts on the bracket, and place the pump along with piping on the body side.
Air Conditioning compressor drive belt
Air Conditioning compressor
Remove fixing bolts and shift aside the compressor with piping attached.
Heater hoses
Disconnect two hoses from the engine.
ATF pipes
Disconnect two pipes from right side engine mount.
Transmission assembly
See "Transmission Removal and Installation".
Left side engine mount
Support the engine.
Remove two fixing bolts from engine mount on chassis side.
Right side engine mount
Remove two fixing bolts from engine mount on chassis side.
