Slow coolant leak for 6 months. Have replaced the water pump, checked hoses. Now a Ford dealer service tech says probable leak into engine. Cost to put in a new engine nearly $8,000.00. No check engine light. Just a small amount of white smoke in exhaust once in a while. No overheating. Vehicle has just under 81,000 miles. Seems insane at under 100,000. Did not say they checked the radiator itself, unless pressure check did that.

Hi,

If you are getting a small amount of coolant into the combustion chamber, it will burn white or create white exhaust smoke and have an odd, sweet smell. However, that certainly does not mean the engine needs replaced. Ugh!!! I don't know why people tell their customers this.

As far as the leak, I suspect he told you there is likely a head gasket issue. Do me a favor. Take a look through the link below and perform as many of the tests you feel comfortable doing. There are a couple that are visual inspections.

Now, there was a recall for a potential fire-related issue caused by a coolant leak at what is called a cylinder head plug. I really feel this is what is happening. The cylinder head plug was improperly installed when the engine was made. As a result, they would leak coolant onto the engine. Because of the heat from the engine, the coolant would evaporate creating a possible fire.

If you look at pic 1, I attached the introduction to the recall. Do you remember this ever being tested or repaired? Also, pic 2 shows a pic of the plug. Keep in mind, if this is the issue, the engine is fine. The leak needs repaired and shouldn't cost you a penny.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe
