The first time the check engine light came on was at highway speed. The car jolted and light came in shortly after. Light remained on and car had slightly rougher idle than normal at city speeds. By the time I was home, the idle had returned to normal and the check engine light went away. Toyota diagnostics found a Code 12 (OBD-I). The technician stated that he found nothing out of the ordinary when driving the car, and the CEL was not illuminated during the test. No repairs were made, Toyota recommended replacing the spark plugs, wires, and distributor. Recently, the CEL has reappeared. This time it appeared without any jolting or noticeable drivability changes and went away by the time I got home. CEL was on for roughly 15 minutes before turning off again. No CEL on startup, only after periods of driving. Car is able to start normally and idles normally. I’ve had a previous Code 12 approximately 2 years ago, unsure if this code was ever cleared from the system. Any information helps! Thank you.

Code 12 Engine revolution signal missing, so I would replace the sensor which is inside the ignition distributor. Here is how to change it out. Also, you can get a rebuilt distributor or the individual internal parts. Here is one that Amazon has:

Check out the images (below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Thank you for your response! Before I do this, I was able to clear the code from the computer. When I took it driving, I got no CEL and there is no code stored in the computer when I check using a jumper wire. However, the car now idles very low and the exhaust smells like gasoline. Car performs normally under acceleration, just that the idle is low when I come to a stop. I was able to drive it for 30 mins both city and highway driving. When starting up today, the idle remains low and the exhaust still smells like gas. Any suggestions?

The crankshaft sensor/ignition module might be going out intermittently. Sorry we only handle one problem per thread, please post your new question here, you must be logged in.
