Hi, the car will start perfectly for about four times then out of the blue it won't start. We have had a new battery installed, a new starter and the mechanic took the "small computer" and had something fixed in it, yet it is still doing the same thing. When it won't start you turn the key fully on and you hear a clicking going around each item that locks in the car so not from the engine side alone. It's as if the car is checking the entire locking system. We tried turning the key to just the first turn of the key and leaving it there for a few moments then tried starting it and it worked for a few times now it won't work. We tried starting it four times in a row and it started perfectly then on the 5th time it would not start. The mechanic has no idea what the problem is and if he carries on replacing more parts I will end up bankrupt but with a new engine :) Please can you suggest what the problem could be. The mechanic said If you bridge the starter out it still does not turn so it cannot be the ignition as we thought. He tried bypassing the ignition and went direct to the starter to no avail. He said the dashboard lights are like disco lights when the car acts up and won't start. Also, it starts when you push it. Thanks

This sounds like a defective starter, or you need to replace the positive battery cable. When the starter is triggered use a test light on the positive lug of the starter, if it goes out the cable it bad, also check the connection at the battery as well, this guide can help:

Hi Ken, the mechanic confirmed he has already checked both the above. He said he has checked just about everything that you'd normally think it is. He now thinks it has something to do with the throttle and he says he knows that sounds strange but after 3 hours of searching for the problem he thinks it has something to do with that. He is taking a part from another Micra and putting it in mine to see if it is the throttle. The car will not start now and clicks once only showing the immobilizer symbol and battery symbol. Best.

Can I ask if the failure is the engine will not crank over or the engine cranks over but does not start?

Okay, let's rule out the starter by using a test light on the starter trigger wire while a helper tries to crank the engine over, if the test light illuminates the starter is bad.

This guide can help us see what's going on:

Hi Ken,

Good news, the mechanic found the problem. It was of all things the throttle body. I have no idea what that is, but the car is now working lovely. Thanks so much. :)

Glad you could get it fixed, thanks for letting us know. Please use 2CarPros anytime we are here to help. Engine cranking is controlled by the starter system. The throttle body has to do with the engine running.
