1999 Infiniti I30 Catalytic Converter Replacement

I own a 1999 Infinity I30. The service engine soon light came on recently and indicates two codes. When diagnosed, they indicated that the EGR valve and the Bank 1 front Catalytic converter had failed. My local shop indicated that I have a California engine (although the car was purchased new and remains in NJ) and must use a converter approved for use in CA. He explained that the monitoring system would not accept a federal emission replacement unit and that the light would come back on if used. The CA converter is much more expensive, so I am wondering if I really need to use it?

No you don't have to use the Cali converter.. You would only have to put a California Cat if you lived in California OR if your vehicle is registered under California for any reason. It does have to be a federally approved cat, but does not have to be California approved. Take it somewhere else would be my suggestion. Also test out the oxygen sensors, they can cause the engine light to come on with the codes similar to a faulty cat. converter's trouble code.
